Dangers to horse riders

I have once before experienced a potential death trap for horse riders as they traverse the donkey corner on the the intersection of the Pomona Kin Kin Road and Upper Pinbarren Creek Road. A lone donkey, which calls out frantically when ever riders pass him has been enough to startle many horses and cause many dismounted riders. On one occasion my friend was thrown from her horse onto the tarmac in the middle of the Kin Kin Road. If a car had been coming she would have been killed and so would the horse and driver possibly.

I complained to the owner who shirked all responsibility, and then I complained to council who had the foresight to put up a warning sign and forced the owner to build a fence some way back from the road so that passing horses would be less surprised by the loud braying. This has not completely solved the problem, and could still potentially result in the death of an unsuspecting rider.

This leads me to an even bigger problem, that also compounds the first problem. The Kin Kin Quarry expansion, which will result in 40 tonne trucks full of rocks traveling at 100 klms per hour every 9 minutes for 6 hours a day. There are several places where the Noosa trails cross the Kin Kin road and trails also pass the quarry. This will result in these trails no longer being safe for children on bikes or persons on horse back.

The Main Roads dept take no responsibility for having to make the quarry company upgrade the road, and the council have already given the quarry the green light to expand.

So beware, and spread the word to other riders. If you wish to take action you can, read the article about the Kin Kin quarry on this website for details on how to protest.

The Quarry at Sheppersons Hill Kin Kin

Recently I attended a meeting at the Kin Kin town hall to further understand the problems locals are going to face when the quarry expands its production in late January.

The increase in mining will result in some 40 trucks with semi trailers leaving the site per day, each carrying approximately 40 tonnes of rocks. The trucks will I believe be leaving at 9 minute intervals which by my calculations means 6 hours a day of large trucks rumbling down the Kin Kin range.

If you have driven this road lately you will understand that this is a frightening concept. The road in not wide enough to safely pass a truck in many areas, and there is a school bus frequently stopping to pick up kids which has to park in the road as there is no where else for it to go. "Lives will inevitably be lost" were the very words of a key note speaker at the meeting, and absolutely no one disagreed with him including attending councilor Lew Brennen.

Other concerns are that the Quarry will have a lot of water run off into our Noosa river system to combat the issue of dust. This which will affect Noosa and Tewantin residents along the river and other river users.

Another proposed route for the trucks is past the Tewantin primary school or through Pomona township.

The Noosa trail network will have several of its trails deemed unsafe for horse riders due to the increase in traffic and noise pollution caused by the large trucks.

The Kin Kin community has launched legal action against the quarry owners, but sadly there is no support from Main Roads who will take no responsibility. Read the letter below from Warren Truss for more details.

Below is a list of persons that can be contacted to express your concerns, also our local councilor:

Division 12 councilor Lew Brennan is responsible for Kin Kin. Lew infers that the Quarry which was granted the application back in 1988 has the rights to go ahead with the expansion, and would like all concerned residents to express their concerns in writing to him asap.

“No Quarry in Kin Kin” fundraiser

“Passing Wind” – a solo show by Linsey Pollak
Friday February 5th. 7.30pm. Kin Kin Hall.
Entry $10 (families - $20)
This show is a quirky look at how wind instruments work and how they are invented using some pretty unexpected materials such as balloons, rubber gloves, irrigation pipe, a feather duster, a watering can and a carrot. We even get to hear Mr Curly (a contra-bass clarinet made from garden hose). Some of these instruments are made as you watch.
All proceeds from this concert go to the “No Quarry in Kin Kin" Fighting Fund

"Too much rubbish"

March 16, 2008 11:00pm
Noosa Mayor Bob Abbot says: Leave Sunshine Coast alone
Intentionally taken out of context

Noosa visitors probably will leave the Sunshine Coast alone if our Council doesn't see the necessity to improve our "rubbish reputation".

Saturday 26.12.2009, the "Editor" decided to enjoy a short stroll through Noosa Heads before the town turns too busy.

What a moment as he arrived at the heart of this great location. A whole army could park their vehicles without paying any tickets which is absolutely rare for Noosa. Only a hand full of visitors walked around at 6 pm. Most restaurants had been closed. Has Noosa turned into a ghost town? The car park next to the "Life Savers" was nearly empty. I asked myself, is this the reaction of Bob´s warning "Leave the Sunshine Coast alone". Sorry Bob, I have taken your words out of context.

I decided to walk along the new eye catching broad walk. After some steps something much more eye catching got my attention.
Bob, look at the attached photo. This saves me to find the right words. End of the day and still the "same rubbish".
Early next day it was still the same. Passing people have been very disgusted about the lack of serve. Curious as I am, I drove through Noosa Woods. The second photo shows the situation there. Opposite the road the same situation. Some minutes later, a council worker turned up. His job was to clean up the litter dropped by people along the walk ways. I asked him if the present situation is unusual? No, this is the typical situation mainly on Sundays and Holidays. Some of the Cleanaway drivers don´t turn up. If he has time, his does the cleanup job. I asked him if there are only 2 forgotten bins in Noosa Woods? No, in his cleaning area is another spot (closer to the beach) where the situation is much worse. He told me that our Council asked the cleaner to send an email to the Council and report similar circumstances. Unfortunately there is no service improvement, he said.
Compared to the rubbish situation in Napoli I shouldn't complain.
